Boksburg spans three types of ground. The town centre and Boksburg Lake sit on the old gold mining belt, dolomite occurs toward Rondebult in the south, and Karoo shale and sandstone cover much of the north and east.
Housing ranges from older homes near the lake to newer estates and complexes around Sunward Park and Parkrand. Many owners want irrigation water, but location within Boksburg shapes both the risk and the approval process.
What Is Under Boksburg
| Formation | Where it sits | What it means for drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Witwatersrand reef quartzites | Underlying the mining belt and the suburbs beside it | Fracture-controlled, slow metres. Proximity to old workings shapes both the drilling plan and the water quality. |
| Historic mine workings | Beneath parts of the belt, often at shallow depth near the outcrop | Voids, collapsed ground and flooded workings. Siting has to keep clear of them. |
| Tailings and reworked ground | Former dump footprints and reclaimed land | Unpredictable near-surface material, and a possible source of sulphate and metals in shallow water. |

- A sealed upper casing matters more here to keep shallow, possibly contaminated water out of the hole.
- Old mine plans are part of siting on ground close to the reef outcrop.
- Treatment may be needed for some uses and in some places the water is best kept to irrigation.

What to Watch For Here
Sinkholes have been reported toward Rondebult. The southern side of Boksburg includes dolomite, and sinkholes have been reported in areas such as Rondebult. On this ground, cavities and soft wad can cause loss of circulation during drilling, and leaking pipes or poor stormwater can trigger subsidence. Every application is scrutinised by the municipality's dolomite specialists, and the conditions they attach shape exactly what is allowed on your stand.
Old mining around the lake affects water and siting. The belt running through central Boksburg was mined heavily, and the flooding of those workings can produce acidic, sulphate-rich groundwater. Undermined ground also needs care when choosing where to set the rig, especially near old shafts. Test the water before using it on vegetables or in a pool.
What the Water Is Used For
- Irrigating gardens in Beyers Park and Bardene
- Shared garden watering for Sunward Park complexes
- Pool top-ups once water has been tested
- Washbays and yards at Witfield businesses
- Standby supply during water outages in Boksburg
Wellpoint or Borehole?
No. Even where shallow water exists, it is the water most likely to be affected by dumps and old workings. A cased and sealed borehole is the way to go.
Approval and Abstraction
Boksburg falls under the City of Ekurhuleni. Both main metros require approval before drilling. The City of Johannesburg requires an application to its Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, and an approved application comes with a drilling certificate that has to be kept on site while the rig works; drilling without one risks a fine and impoundment of equipment. The City of Ekurhuleni requires authorisation, with applications reviewed by its Dolomite Section and by Water Demand Management. Elsewhere, including Mogale City, confirm the municipality's current requirements. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.
Dolomite land adds another step. Development on it falls under SANS 1936, and the Council for Geoscience holds the stability information, so further approval may be required before a rig can come on site. Find out early, because it moves the start date as well as the paperwork.

Borehole Prices in This Area
Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.
| Item | Indicative range | What moves it locally |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling, per metre | R500 - R1,200 /m | Quartzite drills slowly, and keeping clear of old workings can push the position somewhere less convenient for the rig. |
| uPVC casing, installed, per metre | R400 - R700 /m | Sealing off shallow water and fill can mean a longer upper casing string than elsewhere. |
| Mobilisation and site establishment | R2,500 - R9,000 | Access and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting. |
| Water survey | R5,000 - R12,000 | Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent. |
| Yield testing | R3,500 - R15,000 | Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on. |
| Pump, supplied and installed | R15,000 - R45,000 | Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable. |
| Storage and booster | R12,000 - R35,000 | Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate. |
| Typical complete project | R75,000 - R220,000+ | Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis. |
These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.
Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for Gauteng ranging from under R300/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than five to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.
Boksburg Borehole FAQs
How does Boksburg's geology change from north to south?
Broadly, Karoo shale and sandstone cover much of the north and east, the old gold reef workings cross the centre near Boksburg Lake, and dolomite appears toward the south around Rondebult. Boundaries are irregular, and Karoo can sit over older rock.
Each of these drills differently and holds water in its own way, so we confirm the likely ground under your erf before giving any advice on siting or expectations.
Can you drill a borehole in Rondebult given the sinkhole history?
Possibly, but only after Ekurhuleni's authorisation, which includes review by the Dolomite Section. On dolomite land the municipality may set conditions or refuse, and we will follow whatever it decides.
If approved, careful casing, sealing and good water management around the borehole reduce the chance of adding to ground instability.
Do Boksburg estates allow boreholes inside the complex?
Rules differ from one body corporate or HOA to another. Some estates welcome a shared borehole for common gardens, others ban private boreholes outright, and many require trustee approval and a contractor induction before a rig enters.
Ask your managing agent for the written rules early, because trustee meetings can take weeks. Municipal approval from Ekurhuleni is still needed even once the estate agrees.
Is borehole water in Boksburg usually high in iron?
Iron and manganese turn up regularly in water from Karoo rocks in the north, and mine water near the old belt can carry iron along with sulphate and low pH. That can stain paving, walls and pool finishes.
A water analysis tells you exactly what you are dealing with. For irrigation, simple aeration and filtration often reduce staining enough to make the water practical.
