Borehole Drilling
Germiston

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Germiston

Germiston lies in the Central Rand basin, where Witwatersrand quartzite and gold reef conglomerate were mined for over a century. Dolomite is also reported in parts of Ekurhuleni, so the ground under one stand can differ from the next.

The town mixes older freestanding houses around Germiston Lake and Primrose with large industrial areas such as Wadeville. Both homeowners and factories ask about boreholes, but the approach and the paperwork are not the same.

What Is Under Germiston

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Quartzite and gold-bearing conglomerateThe bedrock of the old mining belt, dipping southAbrasive and slow. Open joints carry the water, and near the reef they may link to flooded workings.
Stopes, shafts and subsidence zonesMostly close to the outcrop, thinning out with distance southA hole into a void is lost and unsafe. Mine plans and setbacks narrow where the rig may go.
Made ground over old dump sitesPockets across the belt where dumps were removed or levelledLoose fill that needs casing, with residues that can affect shallow groundwater chemistry.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Expect a broader laboratory analysis covering sulphate, pH and metals rather than a basic potability test.
  • Positions close to the outcrop need the most care because that is where workings come nearest to surface.
  • Fracture yields are typically moderate so storage tends to matter more than pump size.

What to Watch For Here

The Dolomite Section reviews applications here. Ekurhuleni requires authorisation before drilling, and applications pass through the City Planning Department's Dolomite Section as well as Water Demand Management. Parts of the metro are underlain by dolomite, where poorly managed water can trigger subsidence. Allow time for this review and do not let anyone start drilling before approval arrives.

Rising Central basin mine water affects quality. Old workings beneath Germiston have flooded, and acid mine drainage can reach the groundwater. Expect possible acidity, high sulphate, iron and manganese, especially near dumps and slimes dams. A full water analysis comes before any decision about using the water on food gardens or in a factory process.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Washdown and cooling water at Wadeville factories
  • Irrigating established gardens in Primrose and Lambton
  • Dust suppression on industrial yards and depots
  • Backup supply during Ekurhuleni water interruptions
  • Sports field irrigation at schools and clubs

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Best avoided. Near-surface water on reef ground is the first to pick up seepage from tailings, and the rock gives a driven point nothing to work in. Drill and seal instead.

Approval and Abstraction

Germiston falls under the City of Ekurhuleni. Both main metros require approval before drilling. The City of Johannesburg requires an application to its Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, and an approved application comes with a drilling certificate that has to be kept on site while the rig works; drilling without one risks a fine and impoundment of equipment. The City of Ekurhuleni requires authorisation, with applications reviewed by its Dolomite Section and by Water Demand Management. Elsewhere, including Mogale City, confirm the municipality's current requirements. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Dolomite land adds another step. Development on it falls under SANS 1936, and the Council for Geoscience holds the stability information, so further approval may be required before a rig can come on site. Find out early, because it moves the start date as well as the paperwork.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR500 - R1,200 /mQuartzite drills slowly, and keeping clear of old workings can push the position somewhere less convenient for the rig.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mSealing off shallow water and fill can mean a longer upper casing string than elsewhere.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR2,500 - R9,000Access and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR75,000 - R220,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for Gauteng ranging from under R300/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than five to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Germiston Borehole FAQs

What rock is under Germiston, and does dolomite play a part?

Much of Germiston sits on Central Rand Group quartzite and reef conglomerate, the same belt that was mined around Simmer & Jack. Water there is held in fractures and old workings rather than in a uniform aquifer.

Some Ekurhuleni ground is dolomitic, which is why the metro's dolomite specialists vet each drilling application. We check what the municipality's records show for your erf.

Can a Wadeville factory drill its own borehole?

It is possible, but commercial and industrial abstraction often needs more than a municipal drilling approval. Depending on volumes, the national water department may also need the abstraction formally registered or licensed.

Factories should also test water thoroughly, because mine water chemistry can damage boilers, cooling systems and pipework if it is not treated.

Is groundwater near Germiston Lake affected by mining?

It can be. The lake area is surrounded by a long mining history, and rising water in the Central basin carries acid mine drainage in places. Results vary from site to site, so testing a sample is the sensible first step.

Garden irrigation is often still possible with tolerant plants, while drinking or pool use needs treatment and a clean lab report first.

Is a borehole in Germiston worth the cost?

That depends on the stand. Fractured quartzite can produce useful water or very little, and water quality may limit how it is used. A borehole is a better bet where demand is high, such as large gardens or industrial washdown.

We cannot promise yield, depth or a payback period. What we can do is explain the local risks honestly so you decide with the facts.
