Borehole Drilling
Johannesburg Central

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Johannesburg Central

Central Johannesburg crosses three settings. Northern ridges around Parktown and Westcliff are Witwatersrand quartzite and shale, the old gold mining belt runs along the southern edge of the CBD, and Klipriviersberg lava lies further south.

That means heritage homes on steep ridge stands, dense inner city buildings, older suburbs like Kensington, Troyeville and Observatory, and family homes south of the mining belt around Turffontein, Rosettenville and Mondeor.

What Is Under Johannesburg Central

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Witwatersrand quartzite (Hospital Hill Subgroup)The ridges themselves and their upper slopesThe hardest rock drilled in the area. Slow progress and heavy bit wear, with water only in open fractures.
Interbedded shale and ironstone shaleSofter bands between the quartzite beds, usually under the lower groundDrills faster than quartzite. Bedding partings and the contacts with quartzite can carry water.
Scree, boulders and thin rocky soilOn the ridge slopes and terraced standsLoose cover that must be cased, and the main reason rig access is difficult.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Quartzite is the slowest ground in the area and per-metre rates on the ridge reflect it.
  • Fractures decide the outcome so adjacent stands can get very different results.
  • Access is often the first constraint on steep and terraced properties.

Where We Work Around Johannesburg Central

  • Parktown and Westcliff ridges
  • Braamfontein and the CBD
  • Yeoville and Bellevue
  • Kensington, Troyeville and Observatory
  • Turffontein and Rosettenville
  • Mondeor and the Klipriviersberg
  • Old mine dumps south of the city

What to Watch For Here

Undermined ground and mine water south of the CBD. Along the Central Rand mining belt, old workings, mine dumps and rising mine water all affect what lies below. Groundwater there can carry acid mine drainage that is acidic and loaded with sulphate and dissolved metals, so drilling near undermined ground needs extra care, and the water needs testing before any use.

Ridge stands are steep and the rock is hard. On the Parktown, Westcliff and Observatory ridges, quartzite outcrops, terraced gardens and heritage walls restrict where a rig can stand. Quartzite drills slowly, softer shale bands go faster, and water depends on fractures and bedding planes, which dip toward the south, so a strike is never assured.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Garden irrigation for large Parktown and Westcliff properties
  • Supplying building complexes during inner city outages
  • Washing down yards at workshops and depots
  • Irrigating school and club grounds in the suburbs
  • Gardens and pools in Mondeor and Rosettenville

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Ruled out. Ridge ground is rock and boulder from near surface, and the water sits far below suction range. A drilled borehole is the only route.

Approval and Abstraction

Johannesburg Central falls under the City of Johannesburg. Both main metros require approval before drilling. The City of Johannesburg requires an application to its Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, and an approved application comes with a drilling certificate that has to be kept on site while the rig works; drilling without one risks a fine and impoundment of equipment. The City of Ekurhuleni requires authorisation, with applications reviewed by its Dolomite Section and by Water Demand Management. Elsewhere, including Mogale City, confirm the municipality's current requirements. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR600 - R1,400 /mQuartzite is hard on bits and slow. Holes on the crest sit at the top of the range, those on shale footslopes lower.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mDepends on the scree and boulder cover, which changes sharply across a single stand.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR2,500 - R9,000Access and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR75,000 - R220,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for Gauteng ranging from under R300/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than five to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Johannesburg Central Borehole FAQs

Does the ground under Johannesburg change from north to south of the reef?

Yes, and it matters more here than almost anywhere. North of the reef, the Parktown and Houghton ridges are quartzite and shale, which drill slowly and yield from fractures. Along the reef itself the ground is heavily mined.

South of the mining belt, suburbs toward Mondeor sit on Klipriviersberg lava, which weathers to clay and holds water in joints and weathered zones. Which side of the reef you are on shapes the whole job.

Is borehole water safe near the old mines in Johannesburg south?

It cannot be assumed. Rising water in the flooded Central Rand workings can bring acid mine drainage, with a low pH, high sulphate, iron, manganese and other metals, and uranium close to tailings.

Testing is essential before the water serves any purpose beyond basic irrigation, and some sites may turn out unsuitable altogether.

Can a borehole be drilled on a Parktown or Westcliff heritage property?

Often yes, but heritage gardens, stone walls and steep terraces limit rig access, and the work must protect structures and old trees. Walking the stand before booking a rig helps find a safe position.

City of Johannesburg approval is needed before drilling, and if the property has heritage protection it is worth checking whether that brings extra conditions.

What about inner city buildings in Braamfontein or the CBD?

Dense sites with little open ground, basements and many underground services make drilling more complicated. Service records and a scan for buried pipes and cables are important before choosing a spot, and neighbouring foundations need to be respected on tight sites.

Buildings near the southern edge of the CBD also sit close to the mining belt, so a lab test should come before any plumbing is connected.
