Borehole Drilling
Honeydew

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Honeydew

Honeydew lies on the western flank of the Halfway House granite. Weathered granite usually overlies fresh rock, and toward Zandspruit and Muldersdrift small remnants of older, darker greenstone may occur within the granite.

There is a broad mix here: newer complexes and freestanding homes in the suburban core, plus smallholdings and open plots along the western fringe where vegetable growing, animals and home businesses are common.

What Is Under Honeydew

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Halfway House granite and gneissThe basement across the northern and western edge of the Johannesburg DomeHard and slow once fresh. Water sits in joints and fracture zones, so siting matters more than depth.
Saprolite and residual sand-clayFrom surface down to fresh rock on most propertiesEasy to drill and prone to collapse. Its base is commonly the first water strike.
Dykes, quartz veins and greenstone remnantsLinear intrusions and older schist slivers within the graniteContacts are favoured targets. Greenstone remnants weather differently from granite and can change results over short distances.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Larger demand needs a proper yield test because estates and smallholdings draw steadily rather than occasionally.
  • Casing through the weathered zone is standard and its depth varies from one end of a property to the other.
  • Fracture zones and dyke contacts are the targets rather than a set depth.

Where We Work Around Honeydew

  • Laser Park light industry
  • Zandspruit

  • Radiokop
  • Bellairs Park
  • Plots toward Muldersdrift

What to Watch For Here

Greenstone pockets can change the drilling. Toward Zandspruit and the Muldersdrift side, older mafic and ultramafic schist survives as remnants within the granite. It drills differently from granite and its water can differ too, so logging the rock as the hole advances helps decide how it is completed and whether extra testing makes sense.

Industrial neighbours call for careful siting. Light industrial sites around Laser Park and workshops on some plots may store fuels, solvents or chemicals, sometimes in old underground tanks. Any property near these uses should keep the borehole away from storage areas and have the water analysed for more than the basic household parameters before relying on it.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Watering vegetable tunnels and market gardens on plots
  • Drinking water for chickens, goats and horses
  • Garden irrigation for homes in Honeydew Ridge
  • Washing equipment for small businesses run from home
  • Reserve supply during western suburb water outages

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Usually not. A driven point needs clean sand and a water table within about seven metres, and the weathered granite here provides neither on most properties. Drill instead.

Approval and Abstraction

Honeydew falls under the City of Johannesburg. Both main metros require approval before drilling. The City of Johannesburg requires an application to its Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, and an approved application comes with a drilling certificate that has to be kept on site while the rig works; drilling without one risks a fine and impoundment of equipment. The City of Ekurhuleni requires authorisation, with applications reviewed by its Dolomite Section and by Water Demand Management. Elsewhere, including Mogale City, confirm the municipality's current requirements. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR450 - R1,100 /mThe weathered mantle drills fast; fresh granite does not. Deeper holes for larger demand push the total up rather than the rate.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mCasing runs through the weathered granite, which can be thicker on this open ground.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR2,500 - R9,000Access and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR60,000 - R180,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for Gauteng ranging from under R300/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than five to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Honeydew Borehole FAQs

Does the ground change between central Honeydew and the Zandspruit side?

Most of Honeydew is weathered granite over hard granite, the usual pattern for the dome, with dykes and quartz veins adding local variety. Further west, remnants of older greenstone schist are known within the granite and may affect a particular site.

The rock is logged as drilling proceeds, which shows which type was met and helps explain how much water came in and how the hole should be finished.

Can vegetables from a Honeydew smallholding be sold if grown with borehole water?

Growing produce for sale goes beyond the household allowance in Schedule 1 of the National Water Act, so registration or a water use authorisation from the national department may be needed depending on volumes.

That sits apart from the municipal drilling approval, which Johannesburg must grant before any rig sets up, and from any food safety testing a buyer may ask for.

How should a borehole spot be chosen on a Honeydew plot with animals?

Look for a site upslope of kraals, chicken runs and septic soakaways, with access for a heavy truck and space for spoil. Distance from contamination sources is more important than convenience to the house.

A siting visit can weigh these practical points alongside geological clues such as dykes or quartz veins, and the pipe run back to the tanks can be planned at the same time.

Will a Honeydew borehole match the neighbour's yield?

Not necessarily. In fractured granite, one hole may intersect a productive joint while another a short distance away misses it entirely, even when both go through similar weathered material on top.

Only a pump test on your own borehole shows what it can safely deliver, and nobody can honestly put a yield on it beforehand.
