Borehole Drilling
Roodepoort

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Roodepoort

Roodepoort straddles two very different kinds of ground. The southern half sits on Witwatersrand quartzite and the worked-out West Rand gold fields, while the northern suburbs rise onto the weathered granite of the Johannesburg Dome.

Most homes here are freestanding houses on decent stands, mixed with townhouse complexes and older mining-era streets near Florida. Garden irrigation drives most enquiries, and the first question is usually which side of the reef a property falls on.

What Is Under Roodepoort

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Central Rand Group quartzite and conglomerateThe reef outcrop and the ground south of itHard, slow drilling. Water is in fractures, and near old workings it may be connected to mine water.
Undermined ground and old workingsAlong and down-dip of the reef outcropShallow stopes and shafts are a real hazard. Old mine plans and local knowledge are worth checking before a position is set.
Mine dumps, slimes dams and fillScattered across the belt, some reclaimed and built overMade ground is unstable and can carry contamination. It affects both the casing plan and the water.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Water quality testing comes first because acid mine drainage can bring low pH, sulphate, iron, manganese and metals.
  • Undermining has to be ruled out before a drilling position is confirmed.
  • Yields depend on fractures and are typically moderate.

Where We Work Around Roodepoort

  • Florida and Florida Lake
  • Horison and Horison View
  • Discovery and Fleurhof
  • Constantia Kloof and Allen's Nek
  • Wilro Park and Roodekrans
  • Old mine land along Main Reef Road
  • Smallholdings toward Ruimsig

What to Watch For Here

Mine water in the south needs a laboratory test. Flooded West Rand workings have pushed acid mine drainage into the groundwater in parts of the old mining belt. Water from stands near Florida, Discovery or the dumps can be acidic and loaded with sulphate, iron and manganese. Test it before it touches a vegetable bed, a pool or a borehole tank feeding the house.

Undermined ground changes where a rig can safely stand. Shallow historic workings run beneath sections of southern Roodepoort, and old shafts are not always where people expect. Before siting a hole we check available mining and municipal information and keep well away from known shafts. On the granite side to the north the concern shifts to collapsing weathered rock, which is cased off.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Keeping large Florida gardens green through winter
  • Topping up swimming pools after water quality testing
  • Irrigating lawns in Constantia Kloof sectional title complexes
  • Watering horse paddocks on smallholdings toward Ruimsig
  • Backup supply for toilets during municipal outages

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Not advisable. Shallow water in the mining belt is the most exposed to tailings and mine water, and the ground is mostly rock and fill rather than clean sand. A properly sealed borehole is the safer route.

Approval and Abstraction

Roodepoort falls under the City of Johannesburg. Both main metros require approval before drilling. The City of Johannesburg requires an application to its Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, and an approved application comes with a drilling certificate that has to be kept on site while the rig works; drilling without one risks a fine and impoundment of equipment. The City of Ekurhuleni requires authorisation, with applications reviewed by its Dolomite Section and by Water Demand Management. Elsewhere, including Mogale City, confirm the municipality's current requirements. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR500 - R1,200 /mQuartzite drills slowly, and keeping clear of old workings can push the position somewhere less convenient for the rig.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mSealing off shallow water and fill can mean a longer upper casing string than elsewhere.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR2,500 - R9,000Access and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR75,000 - R220,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for Gauteng ranging from under R300/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than five to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Roodepoort Borehole FAQs

Does Roodepoort sit on granite or on the gold reef?

Both, depending on the street. The southern suburbs around Florida, Horison and Discovery lie on Witwatersrand quartzite and shale of the old mining belt. Moving north toward Constantia Kloof and Allen's Nek, the ground typically changes to Johannesburg Dome granite.

That split matters because the two behave differently. Reef quartzite is hard and depends on fractures, while granite has a soft weathered mantle over harder rock. We confirm which applies to your stand before quoting.

Is borehole water near the Florida mine dumps safe to use?

Not automatically. Groundwater close to old workings and tailings in the West Rand belt can be sour and rich in sulphate, iron and dissolved metals. Some boreholes nearby test fine, others do not, so a laboratory analysis is the only reliable answer.

If results show a problem, options include restricting use to hardy garden plants, treatment, or deciding the site is not worth drilling at all.

Can you drill on a stand in Roodepoort that may be undermined?

Often yes, but it needs more homework than a normal job. We look at what records exist about historic workings, avoid known shafts and keep the rig on firm ground. Where the risk looks unacceptable, we will say so rather than drill.

Roodepoort falls under the City of Johannesburg, so the City's drilling application must be approved and the certificate kept on site before work starts.

Why might two Roodepoort neighbours get very different borehole results?

Water in both reef quartzite and granite moves through fractures, joints and weathered zones rather than one continuous layer. A hole that intersects a good fracture can perform well while one a short distance away finds very little.

That is why nobody can honestly forecast yield or depth here. Siting, a test pump after drilling and a water analysis give you the facts before you invest in pumps and tanks.
