Borehole Drilling
Houghton

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Houghton

Houghton Estate climbs the Houghton ridge, made of Witwatersrand quartzite and shale whose beds dip to the south. North of the ridge the ridge rock gives way to the granite of Killarney, Saxonwold and beyond.

Large heritage homes, mature gardens and terraced stands define the suburb, along with embassies and schools, while Lower Houghton eases down toward the Houghton Golf Club on gentler ground.

What Is Under Houghton

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Witwatersrand quartzite (Hospital Hill Subgroup)The ridges themselves and their upper slopesThe hardest rock drilled in the area. Slow progress and heavy bit wear, with water only in open fractures.
Interbedded shale and ironstone shaleSofter bands between the quartzite beds, usually under the lower groundDrills faster than quartzite. Bedding partings and the contacts with quartzite can carry water.
Colluvium and outcropFootslopes and the upper stands near the crestIrregular, bouldery ground that complicates set-up and the top of the hole.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Siting carries more weight here than almost anywhere because the rock between fractures is dry.
  • Holes on the lower slopes are often quicker where shale replaces quartzite.
  • The top of the hole needs care because boulder and scree cover must be cased through.

What to Watch For Here

Quartzite drills slowly and hard. The ridge rock under upper Houghton is tough Witwatersrand quartzite, interleaved with shale bands that drill more easily. Progress through quartzite is slow and wears drilling bits, and water depends on finding open fractures and bedding planes, so patience and careful logging of each change in the rock matter more than speed.

Heritage gardens need a gentle approach. Many Houghton properties have old stone walls, mature trees and formal gardens laid out generations ago. Choosing a rig route that avoids roots and paving, protecting lawns from drilling fluid and cuttings, and confirming any heritage conditions beforehand keeps a historic property intact while the work is done.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Irrigating mature gardens and old trees on large stands
  • Keeping formal lawns and hedges in shape in winter
  • Filling pools and ornamental water features at home
  • Backup water for embassies and larger residences
  • Watering school grounds and sports fields nearby

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Ruled out. Ridge ground is rock and boulder from near surface, and the water sits far below suction range. A drilled borehole is the only route.

Approval and Abstraction

Houghton falls under the City of Johannesburg. Both main metros require approval before drilling. The City of Johannesburg requires an application to its Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, and an approved application comes with a drilling certificate that has to be kept on site while the rig works; drilling without one risks a fine and impoundment of equipment. The City of Ekurhuleni requires authorisation, with applications reviewed by its Dolomite Section and by Water Demand Management. Elsewhere, including Mogale City, confirm the municipality's current requirements. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR600 - R1,400 /mQuartzite is hard on bits and slow. Holes on the crest sit at the top of the range, those on shale footslopes lower.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mDepends on the scree and boulder cover, which changes sharply across a single stand.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR2,500 - R9,000Access and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR75,000 - R220,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for Gauteng ranging from under R300/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than five to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Houghton Borehole FAQs

What is the Houghton ridge made of, and does it suit boreholes?

The ridge belongs to the Hospital Hill Subgroup of the Witwatersrand. Its quartzite is hard and slow to drill, while interbedded shale goes faster; water is held in fractures and bedding rather than through the whole rock.

Results vary from stand to stand. Lower Houghton, below the ridge on its northern side, may sit nearer the granite contact, where conditions differ again.

Can a drilling rig get onto a steep Houghton Estate stand?

It depends on driveway gradient, gate width and whether there is a firm, level area. Upper ridge stands often have tight terraces and rocky outcrop that limit positioning, and old gateposts can be narrower than a modern truck.

Sometimes the best answer is a spot near the street boundary or on a lower terrace, agreed after a site inspection that also checks for buried irrigation and old drains.

Do heritage rules affect drilling at older Houghton homes?

Some older Houghton homes carry heritage protection, and changes to protected structures can need consent. A borehole is usually minor work, but it is worth checking if walls, outbuildings or paving could be disturbed, and the owner is best placed to know the property's status.

Separately, Johannesburg's own drilling approval has to be granted, and its certificate kept at the property, before the rig starts work.

Will a Houghton borehole support a large garden through winter?

Possibly, but no yield can be promised on ridge quartzite, where water depends on fractures the drill may or may not cross. Some holes on the ridge do well and others give little.

A pump test sets the safe rate. Drip irrigation, mulching and storage tanks help a modest borehole cover more of a big garden through the dry, clear winter weeks.
